I just got in a few hours ago from Ivy and I’s first public appearance. We spoke at CREATE South and had a wonderful time. I would like to give Andre Pope the Home Ec 101 Seal of Approval for his BBQ and chicken bog. I will be spending this evening with my family and catching up on things that must be done before I turn into a pumpkin. With that in mind, it is time for an episode of Ask the Audience. Feel free to clap and cheer, we love it, too.
Recently someone asked me a question that seemed perfect for our fun and creative frugal cooks:
When making a layer cake, what do you do with the trimmed bits of cake?

“Trimmed bits”? What are those? LOL
I’m lazy about layer cakes: I just slap ’em one on top of the other and use frosting to fill in that little wedge-shaped ring around the edge. So far, nobody’s complained about a little bit more buttercream!
Have my husband eat them as soon as they’re cut off.
Hey you guys, great presentation at CreateSouth, great to meet you, see you soon, maybe at ConvergeSouth?
Brian
Are you supposed to trim layer cakes? 🙂 No wonder mine don’t look so hot!
I eat them. Immediately. With absolutely no thoughts of sharing.
We save them for the leftover icing and eat them. It is a great way to keep little fingers out of the nice cake you just iced. 🙂
You pile them in a small pan, and cover them with left over butter cream.
Or, as you are icing the cake, you schmear the little bits with butter cream and eat whilst working.
ooooorrrrr You just plop the warm goodness in your mouth and there is no evidence that leftover bits existed.
Cake balls! 😀

I sometimes crumble them to sprinkle on top of the cake to hide imperfections, or save for a ice cream night with the kids 🙂 Add your favorite ice cream and topings for a great sundue or split 🙂
I thought it was my motherly duty to consume the less than perfect bits of cake and scraps of frosting so as not to inflict them on my offspring 🙂
Wow, I had no idea I was supposed to trim layer cakes. Thanks for the tip!
